from the point of view of linguistics, history of literature and history
of culture and preceded by an erudite introduction which locates prose-
writing in the cultural landscape of the epoch. It presents Polish prose-writing
in all its aspects: historical, social, and political, scholary and religious
as well as fiction. Many texts appear here for the first time since the
16th century: they testify to the significance of Polish prose at the time
in the contemporary Europe.
