The most popular publications in the latter half of the 18th century were calendars. In their titles they professed merits of their contents, which ranged from astrology via amusement and history to economics. Usefulness was a factor critical for popularity, which is why the publishers would go any lengths to inform, on title pages, what the content was, and were meticulous about the appearance of the books, consequently the prices ranged considerably, and could reaching even well over 10 zloty. It was only once that the Kalendarz obywatelski, without any embellishments of the title, was published. Krasicki's work was intended to differ from all contemporary calendars. The title definition of his work could be understood as a form of address implying that the book was meant for citizens. The Citizens' Calendar was not dated, so even in the formal aspect it as if contradicted the nature of such 'utility' works. Yet the work had a history of its own, and not an ordinary history it was.
