Lament on the Death of Credit

This coloured woodcut, which was printed in 1655, is one of the European family of this class of publication. There are only two copies of the woodcut preserved in Polish collections: one is kept in Lvov and was described by researchers between the two World Wars, whereas the other, used as the basis for this publication, is in Krakow. The theme of Credit's death enjoyed a widespread presence in 19th-century Polish proverbs; this allows to assume that the theme had been present in Polish culture since the 17th century, yet its other literary of visual evidence has been lost. Supplemented with a verse commentary, it shows the sophisticated level of satirical wit its compilers employed to make it.
