The book is an editorial interpretation of several poems by Adam Mickiewicz composed in 1839-40, e.g. Nad wodą wielką i czystą... (translated by George Rapall Noyes as Within Their Silent, Perfect Glass), Widzenie (A Vision), prepared on the grounds of a detailed analysis of the autographs preserved in the Adam Mickiewicz Museum of the Polish Historical and Literary Society (Société Historique et Littéraire Polonaise) in Paris. This new interpretation of the autographs, confronted with the original folios reprinted on the facing pages, has helped the editor to make several crucial conjectures on the text, which reveal potential, hitherto unknown readings of Mickiewicz's poems.
