To quote the review by Professor Henryk Markiewicz: this work, written in 1930s, was a continuation of the most popular synthesis of the pre-Partitioning history of [Polish] literature (thirteen editions, with the last one dating back to 1983) [...] has still retained major educational values. It contains several highly accurate literary portraits and clear-cut characteristics of eminent and significant works of the period, perfectly illustrated with appropriate extensive quotes. (Please, note that many of these texts have been forgotten and are unobtainable.) Chrzanowski – through his analyses, summaries, quotes, and the excerpts – guides the reader in a way that to a certain extent replaces the direct contact with the original works, absolute majority of which have been stopped being read for ever; here, the reader not only sees into their subject matter but also experiences their artistic taste. A characteristic feature of this reader is its simplicity, power, and stylistic variety: the author is partial to grandiloquence, yet is skilled in the use of humour and irony. Chrzanowski[‘s work] is an eminent achievement that even today is worth following [...].
