The book is a suggestion concerning the manner of reading old texts: being sensitive to the "image of the neighbour". Its assumption is to make the Polish reader aware of the centuries of presence of Rusyns — Ukrainians in the map of Europe, a people that has quite recently continued to be "an offshoot of the Russians". Our few centuries of neighbourhood abounded with years of peaceful coexistence and military confrontations. To be able to understand fully the nature of the neighbour and to accept it, one is to learn the neighbour's past.
